A protest against the Trump administration's immigration policies in San Francisco included a large number of young children who had been taken out of school and taught anti-Trump chants, as documented in a video by a YouTube personality who goes by the name Fog City Midge.
The protest was a part of the "Close the Camps" movement, which uses the rhetoric of illegal immigration detention facilities as concentration camps, and attempts to organize protests across the country in favor of closing detention facilities, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and "letting our people go."
The protest took place on Sept. 16, and students from Buena Vista Horace Mann school were checked out to participate. According to an excerpt that Fog City Midge alleges is from the parent permission slip, the school made an institutional decision to participate.
On September 16th, Mexican and Central American Independence Day, various community organizations, unions and representatives of the city have called for a march. The march will be peaceful and appropriate for all families. The slogans of the march will be "keep families together," "free the children," and "close the camps."
As it turned out, the march's slogans were a bit more inflammatory. Video of the event shows students chanting things such as "Who do we hate? Donald Trump," "You build the wall, we tear it down," and "Brick by brick, wall by wall, the border wall will fall."
At one point, Fog City Midge approaches a child holding a sign that features President Donald Trump with devil's horns with the words "Cheetos suck" on it. She asks the boy whether it's wrong to make fun of someone for the color of their skin.
The boy replied, "I know, but this is Trump. He's being racist to everybody else." An adult interrupted the interview and said the child was not consenting to any further questions on camera.
A parent was asked if the children have an awareness of the issue they're protesting, and she replied, "I'm supportive of my daughter, and this is what she learned in school."
