6 Habits that Actually Change Your Brain

For many years, scientists believed that our brains became fixed after a certain age, but new research shows that we can rewire our brains at any age.
While there’s much we still don’t know about neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change its structure), studies show that our daily habits can change our brains.
The good news is the habits that improve our brains have many other benefits like weight loss, easing depression and boosting energy levels. So make a conscious effort to add these habits to your daily routine.

HERE ARE HABITS THAT ACTUALLY CHANGE YOUR BRAIN.

1. Sleep

You and I know that sleep has a very big impact on our health, but did you know that lack of sleep can shrink your brain?
This study found that people who had sleep problems had a rapid decline in brain volume compared to those who slept well, in a period of three and a half years. Other studies show that lack of sleep causes protein buildup in the brain that attacks your brain cells.
It doesn’t take long for sleep to affect your cognitive abilities. Not sleeping well for even one night can lead to poor concentration and lack of focus. You can keep your brain healthy by getting at least seven hours of sleep every night.

2. Meditation

Researchers have discovered that regular meditation can make you less anxious and fearful by reducing volume in the amygdala. Additionally, meditation can improve your focus and concentration.
If you’ve never meditated before, start with five- to 10-minute sessions every day. But for optimal benefits, you need to meditate for at least 20 minutes a day.

3. Drinking Coffee

As someone who drinks two cups of coffee a day, discovering this made me smile. It turns out that coffee can lower the risk of brain-related conditions such as depression and Parkinson’s disease.
Researchers say these benefits are mainly related to caffeine, but I should remind you that the strong antioxidant properties of coffee can also improve your health.

4. Regular Exercise

Do you seem to think more clearly after a good workout? Well, exercise can do more than improve your thinking.
The results of this study showed that seniors who exercised vigorously had the cognitive abilities of people 10 years younger than them. Regular exercise and playing sports have also been shown to lower the risk of dementia.
Luckily, you don’t have to wait for years to enjoy the brain benefits of exercise. This short workout can help you think more clearly in just 10 minutes.

5. Staying Organized

You may be hurting your brain if you always have to clean up big messes at home or work. Research shows that clutter can make you stressed and less focused.
Instead of letting clutter build up, form the habit of cleaning up your house or desk every morning.

6. Your Diet

Many people don’t know that this small organ requires about 20 percent of the body’s energy resources. Not only that, the source of energy matters.
Research shows that a high-sugar diet disrupts neuroplasticity – another reason you should cut back on sugar.
A high-fat diet, on the other hand, is good for your brain. Also, turmeric has been shown to protect your brain by lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s.
