Shocking moment woman repeatedly slaps her granddaughter after the girl 'refused to wear a face mask on the subway' in China

A Chinese grandmother has been caught on camera savagely hitting her young granddaughter after the girl allegedly refused to put on a face mask on the subway.
Shocking footage, said to be filmed on a metro line in Shanghai, shows a woman dressed in yellow slapping a crying child in the face at least three times.
She can be heard yelling 'stop crying' and 'what are you doing' to the girl while beating her in front of other commuters who did not intervene.

Horrifying clip published by a Shanghai-based journalist on Twitter-like Weibo shows a woman dressed in yellow slapping a crying child in the face at least three times on a subway train

The horrifying clip was first uploaded to Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter, by Shanghai-based journalist Xuan Kejiong.
In a post from yesterday, Mr Xuan said the video had gone viral on social media.
He claimed that the grandmother was infuriated after her granddaughter had ignored her order of putting on a face mask to protect against the coronavirus.

According to Mr Xuan, an established social affairs TV reporter, web users had been sharing the clip because they had believed that the woman was a human trafficker.
But police confirmed that she was, in fact, the girl's grandmother and was penalising the child for disobeying her.

The woman's behaviour has sparked a heated discussion on Weibo, with web users debating over the appropriateness of the physical punishment.
One person supported the grandmother and said: 'It is certain that those who blame the adult for losing her temper are childless or don't have a child who is extremely naughty.'
Another web user also defended the grandmother: 'It's possible that the grandmother had asked [the girl] nicely beforehand and [the girl] did not listen.'
However, many people criticised the woman. One typical comment read: 'It is indeed to humiliating to slap a child in the face like this.'
