MUST SEE: Filipino Weightlifter Sgt. Hidilyn Diaz Breaks Down in Tears During Anthem After Winning Her Country’s First Ever Olympic Gold Medal

Philippine Air Force Sgt. Hidilyn Diaz made history on Monday! The 30-year-old weightlifter brought pride to her home country when she bagged the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the Philippines.  She also tied a world record in the process.

She ended the Philippines 97-year-wait for the gold medal in Olympics. She defeated China’s Liao Qiuyun, who holds the world record also.

But there’s more to this story.

An old social media post is making rounds today.  Hidilyn asked for financial help to help pay for her way to the Olympics.  She couldn’t afford training and travel by herself.  She asked her followers “if it’s okay” to ask for sponsorship from private companies.

Translation: “Is it okay to ask for sponsorship from private companies for Tokyo 2020? I’m having a hard time. I need financial support.  Do you think that’s okay? I feel shy doing it but I will try to achieve my dream for our country to take home the Olympic gold medal.”

Then she went and won gold.

Hidilyn broke down and cried during the national anthem of the Philippines.

Beautiful.

PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYED FOR THE FIRST TIME in the Olympics podium.
